Reproductive Carrier Screening (3 Gene Panel)
From November 1st 2023 the Australian Government is introducing a rebate for the 3 gene reproductive carrier screening test.
Our test will tell your patient if they are a carrier for three of the most common genetic disorders: Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Fragile X Syndrome.
Some important things to keep in mind:
1.Most people are unaware that they are carriers and often do not have a history of these conditions in their family.
2.If your patient does have a blood relative who is either a carrier or affected by one of these disorders, they have a greater chance of being a carrier.
3.There is result support for doctors as Sonic Genetics offer post-test phone-based genetic counselling free-of-charge to couples found to be at high-risk of having a child affected with an inherited disorder that can cause serious illness.

RANZCOG recommends that information about carrier screening for common disorders be offered to every woman either prior to conception (preferred) or in early pregnancy.
This requirement to provide informed consent can present a significant challenge for busy practitioners and so we have put together some commonly used resources for both yourself as the practitioner and your patients.
