Dr Jürgen Stahl was born in Germany, where he obtained his medical degree and MD at the Medical School of Hanover. He spent one undergraduate year at the University of Melbourne where he acquired a BMedSci, followed by a PhD at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (in the Cancer Research Unit, under the direction of Donald Metcalf). Dr Stahl trained in anatomical pathology at the Flinders Medical Centre and gained his FRCPA in 1996 and then his MRCPath in 1997, followed by the German Fellowship in Pathology. He continued to work at Flinders Medical Centre as Senior Consultant until 2005, being heavily involved in teaching. Dr Stahl became Associate Professor in 2004. After having spent one year as Head of Surgical Pathology at Clinpath Laboratories in Adelaide he joined Adelaide Pathology Partners in 2006.

He continues to be involved in medical student teaching and, after serving as Chief Examiner for the Basic Pathological Sciences and as Associate Chief Examiner in Anatomical Pathology, he is now the new Co-Chief Examiner for Anatomical Pathology of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (sharing the position with Associate Professor Elizabeth Salisbury, Sydney). A/Prof Stahl has had a long-standing interest in uropathology, gastrointestinal pathology and hepatobiliary pathology.
